¹⁸ When he takes the throne^(A) of his kingdom, he is to write^(B) for himself on a scroll a copy^(C) of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests. ¹⁹ It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life^(D) so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees^{(E) 20} and not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites and turn from the law^(F) to the right or to the left.^(G) Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel.^(H)

²⁴ Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see the man the Lord has chosen?^(A) There is no one like^(B) him among all the people.”

Then the people shouted, “Long live^(C) the king!”

²⁵ Samuel explained^(A) to the people the rights and duties^(B) of kingship.^(C) He wrote them down on a scroll and deposited it before the Lord. Then Samuel dismissed the people to go to their own homes.

³ When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a covenant^(A) with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed^(B) David king over Israel.

¹² Jehoiada brought out the king’s son and put the crown on him; he presented him with a copy of the covenant^(A) and proclaimed him king. They anointed^(B) him, and the people clapped their hands^(C) and shouted, “Long live the king!”^(D)

¹⁷ Jehoiada then made a covenant^(A) between the Lord and the king and people that they would be the Lord’s people. He also made a covenant between the king and the people.^(B)
